About Us

Bruce and Katherine Johnson started Dragonfly Farms in 2007 on a 54 acre farm in Central Virginia. They began their business of producing quality grassfed beef on forage alone by focusing on breeding selection, grazing management, animal welfare and environmental stewardship. Today, they are currently grazing 600 plus acres and managing a beautiful herd of grassfed and grass finished cattle from birth to butcher. The beef from Dragonfly Farms is well marbled and flavorful, and brings customers back year after year. Dragonfly Farms does all of this while using regenerative grazing practices and has won environmental stewardship awards.

The lamb at Dragonfly Farms is unique because it is completely grassfed, which is difficult in this area. Through improved genetics of the sheep and high quality forage production, Dragonfly Farms is able to seasonally provide delicious, mildly flavored grassfed lamb.

The pork at Dragonfly Farms is from pigs that were raised on pasture and fed a non-GMO grain.

Bruce is a Virginia native, growing up in northside Richmond and then Ashland. He has always been a gardener and worked for 15 years in greenhouses and nurseries and ran his own landscaping company for years. Bruce enjoys working with customers and has sold his farm products at farmers markets, butcher shops, an online co-op, local grocery stores and a few local restaurants. In addition, he has helped and collaborated with other new local farmers to help them with sustainable practices and animal husbandry skills. Bruce Johnson is committed to farming practices that focus on clean water, wildlife habitat protection and soil health.

Katherine got her undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech in Animal Science with an emphasis in beef production. She went on to complete veterinary school in 2003. Katherine’s current focus is on equine sports medicine and injury rehabilitation, so it is fortunate that Bruce’s herd of cattle is healthy and does not need much intervention by Katherine! She does, however, enjoy helping with the sustainable environmental practices on the farm and meeting customers who are interested in their beef, lamb and pork.

With years of experience in pasture management and animal husbandry, Dragonfly Farms is producing delicious and nutritious food for the community, while improving the environment and supporting the local economy.
