In the Midst of Calving Season

Thirteen days into calving season we have 15 calves, all doing well. Where we are in central Virginia we prefer to calve in the fall instead of spring. The fescue combined with the summer heat lends to less problems if we calve in fall. The calves have plenty of time to grow and get ready for the Virginia winter.  Our cows prove to have good maternal instincts, taking right to their calves, especially with eight of them being first time mothers. These calves were all sired by Ajax, a pure bred Belted Galloway. This winter we will breed the cows to our new Angus bull.

Here are a few pictures of our cows and calves taken on this rainy day-
